Washington County high school seniors preparing for college

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Two of Washington County’s largest institutions of higher education are partnering up to help high school seniors prepare for college.

They want to help high school seniors complete a college or university application this October. 

Representatives from Dixie Technical College, Utah Tech University and Utah System of Higher Education will visit every high school in the county. This initiative is in support of Utah College Application Month, which runs throughout the month of October. 

“It’s not too early for high school juniors and seniors to start planning the next steps of their educational path, and Utah College Application Month is the perfect opportunity for students and parents to engage in conversations about the future,” Jordan Rushton, president of Dixie Technical College, said in a press release from Utah Tech University.

During the visit, students will learn about educational opportunities across the entire state.

Students in Washington County can send in a free application to Utah Tech University with waiver code UT2024, and Dixie Technical College using the waiver code UCAW23. 

Before you apply it’s important to note the differences between the two institutions, said the press release. 

Technical colleges, such as Dixie Tech, offer programs for a particular career or trade. Typically, programs are completed in one year or less.

On the other hand, polytech universities have general education degrees in addition to associate, bachelor and graduate degrees. 

“Taking advantage of the educational opportunities right here in Southern Utah is critical to ensuring loved ones continue to live, work and thrive here,” Rushton said.
