PHILADELPHIA — Tuesday night we saw the first, and possibly the only, presidential debate between Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, and Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. ABC News hosted the debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia

The stage was set in a moderately sized room. Trump and Harris shook hands before taking their places behind two podiums across from the moderator’s desk. Aside from the candidates and moderators, the room remained largely empty while the debate progressed.

The first hour of the Trump-Harris debate

The first hour of the debate focused primarily on domestic issues within the United States. The candidates discussed the current status of the economy, issues surrounding immigration, the transition of power and abortion.

Two particular issues turned a difficult spotlight on each candidate. For Trump, it was the January 6 riots. For Harris, it was recent changes to her policy standings.

“She’s going to my philosophy now,” Trump said. “In fact, I was going to send her a MAGA hat.”

Following a short break, the candidates debated foreign policy, including hostages in Gaza and the war in Ukraine. They also discussed the withdrawal from Afghanistan, an issue Trump has harshly criticized the Biden administration for. The moderators also briefly questioned both candidates about statements relating to Harris’ race. Both candidates additionally weighed in on the Affordable Care Act and their views on it.

Overview and closing statements

Trump focused largely on economic issues and the ongoing border crisis. He frequently tied the discussion back to reports of immigrant importation and violence in America, blaming the Biden administration for failing to secure the border.

Trump claimed that the United States was being “laughed at all over the world” due to the actions of the current administration.

He stated that he would fix the issues that he saw as the fault of “weak” leadership.

Harris regularly went after past statements attributed to Trump.

“Talk about extreme,” Harris said in response to Trump’s talk of immigrant crime and other claims.

She spoke in her closing statement of charting “a new way forward” for America. Harris spoke repeatedly of the hopes and dreams of American citizens and claimed that she would create an “opportunity economy” to support that.

We want to hear from you.
