SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Republican Party choose Celeste Maloy as its nominee in the special election for the 2nd Congressional District seat. Now it’s the Democrat’s turn. The Utah Democratic Party will gather online on Wednesday to select its nominee.

The Democrats have three candidates vying for the nomination – Sen. Kathleen Riebe, D-Cottonwood Heights, Guy Warner and Archie Williams.

Diane Lewis, chairwoman of the Utah Democratic Party, told KSL NewsRadio the convention will be held virtually and it will start at 6 p.m.

She is asked to describe the process.

“So, we will open the convention with a welcome,” she said. “We will be putting a link to this meeting on our website so that everybody that would like to watch this can. We would love to have anybody join us.”

She says all of the Democratic delegates across the state are invited to watch.

“So that we are all-inclusive,” Lewis said. “And have as many people there as would love to be there.”

The Utah Democratic Party convention will be virtual

Lewis says it will be more of a webinar.

“So, no one will be able to speak except for the three candidates,” Lewis said.

Lewis says she and the rules chairperson will be the other individuals to speak.

She says ballots will be sent out electronically. And delegates can vote through a verified email account.

“Plus then we also send out a text message because that way then it’s covered,” Lewis said. “And they can either vote from their phone if they’re not available to get on their email. Of course, most people have emails on their phones now. So, that’s the way that will work.”

Lewis says their voting system will be based on ranked choice.

“It automatically counts as it goes and being that there are three candidates,” she said. “We don’t have to send out another ballot. It just automatically ranks them in as it counts.”

KSL at Night can be heard most weeknights from 7 to 9 p.m.
