WASHINGTON D.C. — Senator Mike Lee has introduced the SAVE act, a measure designed to stop non-citizens from registering to vote for federal elections.

The measure would require everyone to show proof of American Citizenship when registering to vote in a federal election.

It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. But, Senator Lee believes that more measures are necessary to enforce that law.

“The fact that we don’t have any mechanism in place currently to bring that about is folly,” he said.

Texas Representative Chip Roy and Speaker Mike Johnson joined Lee in supporting the bill. He said they have a growing list of co-sponsors.

“The first or second question that I am asked in every public forum is about election security,” Johnson said.

In a speech about the need for election security, Johnson stressed the potential impact of illegal voters. He stated that even one percent of illegal immigrants in the US could cast hundreds of thousands of votes.

“Since our elections are so razor thin,” Johnson said, “this is a dangerously high number.”

The bill’s full name is the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility act.

“We owe it to ourselves, to each other, most importantly to the American people, to make sure that those making decisions on behalf of our government and who’s going to serve in government in elective office are indeed empowered to make those decisions.” Lee said.
