SALT LAKE CITY — Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson says the Tooele County Clerk discovered an issue during its Second Congressional District recount process Friday.

According to a press release from the Lt. Gov.’s office, the issue affects the way 55 adjudicated ballots were tallied. Adjudicated ballots are ballots with “unclear marks.” They require poll workers to “review the ballot to determine the voter’s intent.”

The press release states that each election always has a small number of adjudicated ballots.

Washington County is the only other location in Utah at this time to notice this issue.

“Nothing is more important to state and local election officials than ensuring that every eligible vote is accurately counted,” Henderson said in the press release. “This is part of the process and why we have recounts. I am grateful to Tooele County Clerk Tracy Shaw who, because of her diligence, discovered this issue, brought it to our attention and corrected it.”

The ballots are currently being recounted. Canvassing was paused on Thursday. The recount will be done by Monday, Aug. 5.
