Utah lawmaker proposes potty training bill

SALT LAKE CITY— A Utah lawmaker introduced a potty training bill that would require children to be potty trained to enroll in kindergarten.

The potty training bill was introduced and sponsored by Rep. Douglas Welton (R-Payson.) The Utah State Board of Education would be required to enforce the rule, “as a condition for kindergarten enrollment,” according to the bill text. 

Currently, the bill creates exemptions for kids with, “condition(s) described in an IEP.” An IEP is an individualized education plan.

If a child has a disability that makes getting them potty trained before kindergarten unfeasible, they are exempt from the rule, as long as it is listed in their IEP.

The potty training bill has yet to be introduced to or discussed by a committee. If it is passed and signed into law, the rule would take effect on May 1, 2024.

Based on that date, it’s possible it could impact some kids enrolled in kindergarten before the current school year ends.

KSL Newsradio has reached out to Rep. Welton for further comment, but received no response at the time of publication.
