What bills still need action on the final day of the 2024 Legislative Session

SALT LAKE CITY— Friday is the final day of Utah’s 2024 General Legislative Session. State lawmakers are now working with mere hours on the clock to get any remaining bill passed and on to the governor’s desk.

A controversial bill needs the Senate’s approval before midnight. It seeks to keep the name, image and likeness contracts of Utah’s college athletes out of the public eye.

The bill would not allow Utah’s NIL contracts to be accessible under Utah’s GRAMA, or public records laws.

There’s another bill that could affect Utah’s Medicaid recipients in some circumstances. According to the bill text, it, “establishes a protocol of cost control measures to implement relative to the Medicaid program and Medicaid expansion, respectively, in the event of a Medicaid shortfall.”

Basically, if there’s ever a shortfall, some services could be affected. That bill still needs both House and Senate approval.

Major water legislation on the final day

A bill that could play a huge role in helping the Great Salt Lake still needs approval from the full Senate.

The bill would fund a study, with the ultimate goal of creating a state water database and water center. This would make tracking water throughout Utah much easier, by bringing all the data in the state into one location.

Another bill that could save water for the Great Salt Lake still has one more hurdle to reach the governor’s desk.

The bill would establish incentives for developers of new housing if they use water-wise turf or other landscaping options that save irrigation water. That bill still needs the approval of the full House.
