Little Sahara Recreation Area expecting crowds over Easter weekend

SALT LAKE CITY — Big crowds are expected at the Little Sahara Recreation Area this weekend.

Easter weekend always draws huge crowds to what’s been called Utah’s biggest sandbox at Little Sahara, especially when it coincides with spring break. Up to 15,000 visitors are expected to descend on the unique desert area in Juab County.

There will be extra law enforcement and emergency medical services on site to keep the visitors safe and the experience enjoyable.

Campsites are first-come, first-served.

“We want to make sure people understand that some of their favorite spots may not be available and they’re going to have to be looking elsewhere … Also, many folks have already come in for the weekend, so some of the popular camping areas may already be full,” Ashley Snipes with the Bureau of Land Management said.

But Snipes said there is Wi-Fi, so guests can get their park fees paid in advance and skip the lines. And, the visitor center will extend operating hours through the weekend.

Following the rules at Little Sahara

Snipes urged visitors to follow the recreation area‘s rules and to be respectful. The BLM also encouraged visitors to leave no trace.

ATV and OHV drivers must have a driver’s license. Visitors can purchase entry in advance online. 

Visitors are also asked to leave archaeological artifacts alone.

“Leave any of those archeological artifacts you find for somebody else to find,” Snipes said.

She also said to be mindful of campfires. While they’re permitted, pallet burning isn’t.

“Pallet burning is illegal at Little Sahara. So please don’t bring any pallets for your campfire.”

Snipes also asked visitors not to drink and drive.

“We want to make sure everybody is safe when they’re recreating and continues to come back to see us.”
