Juveniles responsible for starting wildfire in Mapleton, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — A fire in Mapleton that was started by humans early Saturday reached 50 acres by the morning.
According to the Mapleton Police Department, officers found that juveniles were allegedly responsible for starting the Maple Fire around midnight on the south end of Fire Break Road above Mapleton.
“The origin of the fire is human caused,” the police department said. “Mapleton police officers have identified how the fire started and the juvenile(s) that are responsible. There is still more investigating that needs to be done so at this point this is all we are prepared to release.”
By 2:45 a.m., the police department said the fire had gone up the mountain in the area.
“Fire crews are working the south and west flanks, as of now fire is moving away from homes,” the police department said. “At this point there are no evacuations in place only an evacuation warning for the homes to the south against the bench.”
Utah Fire Info released a statement Saturday evening saying that the fire had not grown since the morning. It said the fire was 30% contained.
The police department also asked people not to fly drones around the fire.
Saturday morning
By 7:13 a.m. on Saturday, the Utah Fire Info said air assistance was expected to help with the fire.
“Crews worked through the night and stopped the forward spread,” the UFI said. “Ground and air resources will continue suppression efforts today.”
Fire progression
By 8 a.m., the police department said the fire’s progression came to a stop.
“Unbelievable work was done throughout the night by many different fire agencies,” the police department said. “They made fantastic progress and we are happy to report that forward progression of the fire has been stopped.”
Police are asking people to stay away from the fire, for drivers to continue keeping roads clear and to continue grounding drones in the area as firefighters work on the fire.
