SALT LAKE CITY — A fire started on Saturday in Utah County near the construction of a new high school in the area, growing to an estimated 175 acres.

The smoke could be seen on the Utah Department of Transportation cameras, positioned at Redwood Road and Parkway Blvd.

Smoke was seen behind the Saratoga Springs Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to the west of the building, with the wind traveling north.

Police ordered the evacuation of Mahogany Street near Brixton Park at 3:52 p.m.

A spokesman with the Unified Fire Authority gave an update shortly after 5 p.m.

The spokesman said the fire’s cause was still undetermined. The blaze had spread to an estimated 175 acres, though the spokesman said the fire was contained, not extinguished.

The spokesman said it appears that the blaze started near the construction of the new high school, though no structures were damaged.

Fire crews were called when flames appeared to threaten Brixton Park, but they remained on standby as the flames did not get close enough to damage them.

The spokesman credited on the ground fire crews as well as helicopters for containing the fire and protecting structures.

Saratoga Springs Fire & Rescue estimated that people could return to their homes by 7 p.m. Saturday night.
