France Canyon Fire at 90% containment, reaches over 34,000 acres

SALT LAKE CITY — After burning over 34,000 acres, the France Canyon Fire reached 90% containment on Saturday with the help of 90 personnel helping to fight the fire.

The Dixie National Forest said in a news release that the fire reached 34,943 acres after first being discovered on June 11.

“The area where containment has not yet been reached is in very steep, rugged country that is inaccessible to crews and aircraft,” the news release said. “Firefighters will remain patrolling the fire and mopping up hot spots until after full containment is reached.”

Firefighters also wanted to remind the public that the fire is still active, and to not make reports on the fire.

“There continue to be firefighters and equipment on the ground working the heat sources and clearing hazardous areas for future public use, as well as rehabbing portions of the fire vulnerable to flooding,” the news release said. “Respect the closures to avoid endangering yourselves and the firefighters.”

According to the Dixie National Forest, lightning was suspected to have caused the France Canyon Fire to start.
