Avalanche danger ‘considerable’ around Wasatch Front, Cottonwood Canyons

SALT LAKE CITY — The latest round of rain and snow has elevated the avalanche danger that might linger through the weekend.

Utah Avalanche Center Forecaster Greg Gagne said that most of the danger is in the northern Wasatch Front and upper Cottonwood Canyons.

“Probably considerable, which means human-triggered avalanches are likely. So I expect we’re going to be staying by the considerable avalanche danger through much of the coming week.”

Gagne said it’s the high winds and heavy wet snow that are pushing the danger.

“With avalanche forecasting, we look at snow, but we also look at how the wind is blowing. So it’s been a pretty windy storm, so we’re expecting some sensitive wind drifts at the mid- and upper elevations.”
