Little Cottonwood Canyon backcountry closures, interlodge restrictions to begin at 10 p.m.

ALTA, Utah — Backcountry closures and interlodge orders are slated to go into effect on March 17 in Little Cottonwood Canyon, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. 

Avalanche crews will be performing mitigation efforts. The National Weather Service expects more snow and has issued winter weather advisories for parts of the state. 

Backcountry closures go into effect at 10 p.m., restricting user entry on the north side of the canyon. They will impact areas between Lisa Falls Couloir and Twin Lakes Pass, per a map shared on X by UDOT Avalanche. 

Traffic traveling uphill on SR-210 will be restricted at midnight, according to an X post from UDOT Cottonwood Canyons. At 12:30 a.m. on March 18, downhill traffic will close at Snowbird Entry 1. 

Interlodge orders in the Town of Alta go into effect at 12:30 a.m., per the Town of Alta’s X post. 

When will backcountry closures, interlodge be lifted? 

According to UDOT, part of the terrain included in the backcountry closures is expected to reopen March 18 at 9 a.m. In maps shared by UDOT, the terrain expected to open then is labeled as the “Full North Side.” 

The rest, labeled on a separate map titled “Mid North Side” is expected to remain closed until 5 p.m. on March 18. 

SR-210 road closures are expected to last until 8:45 a.m. on March 18. UDOT Cottonwood Canyons said they will post updates on X if the opening is delayed more than 15 minutes. 

The Town of Alta’s post did not provide an estimate on when interlodge restrictions will be lifted.
