Residents evacuated from Shurtz Canyon, upper basin above Graff Point Fire

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Fire Info has announced an evacuation order is currently in place due to the Graff Point Fire in Iron County.
Utah Fire Info said in an X post that “cabins, trailers, etc, that are located above the fire in the upper basin and Shurtz Canyon” are a part of the Graff Point Fire evacuation order.

Additionally, Utah Fire Info said that Shurtz Canyon Road to Right Hand/Kolob Mt. Road is closed. They have asked the public to avoid the area.
On Saturday morning the fire was reported to be at 70 to 100 acres. At about 8 a.m., Utah Fire Info said on an X post that the fire was growing.
“Firefighters are working to improve access in steep and rugged terrain,” The X post said. “The cause is currently under investigation, but it was likely caused by lightning.”
Just one of many wildfires this season
According to Utah Fire Info’s website, there have been 528 wildfires reported this season. Of those, only 82 have been confirmed to be naturally caused.
In contrast, 396 have been confirmed to be human-caused. Another 50, including the Graff Point Fire, have unknown causes.
Utah Fire Info’s website said that if you see a wildfire, you should call 911 to report it.
