One person killed in avalanche in Weber Canyon backcountry area

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — An avalanche in the Weber Canyon backcountry area Thursday afternoon has claimed the life of one person, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a Facebook posting, Summit County Dispatch received a call of an avalanche at about 3:30 p.m. Two individuals were confirmed to have been buried in the avalanche. Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene and were able to locate both individuals.

Despite life-saving measures being performed, one individual was deceased at the scene. The second individual has been transported to a nearby hospital.

No other information was available. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says it could be several hours before any updated information is available.
