Recent snowstorm draws skiers to Snowbird

SNOWBIRD, Utah — While there was little snow in Utah’s mountains during December, January is off to a better start for outdoor enthusiasts.

At Snowbird Ski Resort, 13 inches of snow fell Friday night into Saturday. Needless to say, the resort was busy on Saturday.

Roarke Robins is one of the many skiers and snowboarders who flocked Saturday to Snowbird to take in the new snow.

“I have been skiing since diapers,” he said. “Got here 9:30 – 10ish, and it was nice and bright.”

Robins recently moved back to Utah from California.

He said he has missed the snow but could do without the crowds.

“The buses were very crowded,” he said. “First stop and it already was full.”

Snowbird coordinators said there are numerous ways to commute to the lifts without having to park a vehicle. Many lots were full by 1 p.m. Saturday.

“We try to encourage carpooling here at Snowbird,” said Riley Whitney, communications coordinator at Snowbird. “We have Canyon Carpool Club, which is our initiative to incentivize carpooling. You might even get some swag and gifts by participating. Folks could use the ski bus, and they can always use our partner programs like Cottonwood Connect.”

All 12 lifts were spinning on Saturday.
