Fire weather warning issued for Salt Lake, Southern Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for the Salt Lake Desert until 9 p.m. Sunday evening.

A Red Flag Warning means that there are critical weather conditions, in this case high winds and low humidity, that could cause “extreme fire behavior,” according to the NWS.

Winds up to 25 miles per hour with gusts up to 40 miles per hour are expected, along with as low as 5 to 10% humidity.

A Red Flag Warning is in place for Zones 492, 495, 497, 496 and 498 until 9 p.m. Monday July 1 and Zone 478 until 9 p.m. Sunday, June 30. (National Weather Service)

The same warning is also in place in the southwestern part of Utah until 9 p.m. Monday morning.

Gusty winds will develop over the area by this afternoon, with gusts to 35 mph anticipated. These winds will combine with the very dry conditions over southwest Utah to create critical fire weather conditions Sunday into Monday.
