Triple-digit heat returning to Utah for the holiday weekend

SALT LAKE CITY—There are very few places to escape the July heat wave this holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the Wasatch Front, as temperatures are expected to soar above 100 degrees again for Pioneer Day weekend.
KSL Meteorologists forecast highs of 104 degrees in Salt Lake City on Saturday and 105 on Sunday. Pioneer Day is also staring down triple digit heat in Utah’s capital.
St. George is looking at temperatures north of 110 degrees Saturday and Sunday. Even areas along the Wasatch Back will see highs in the upper 90s.
People looking to escape the heat will have to try Park City or go all the way to Flaming Gorge. Those areas are looking at highs in the low-90s.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Linda Cheng told KSL NewsRadio excessive heat means there’s a higher chance for people to suffer heat-related illnesses.
Here are some tips for those headed out of town, especially if air conditioning is not a resource:
- Stay hydrated and bring plenty of water.
- Stay in the shade as much as possible.
- Avoid strenuous work or other activities at the hottest times of the day.
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing. A hat is also a good option.
- Check on neighbors or those who might be more susceptible to heat-related illness.
The excessive heat warning for the Northern Wasatch Front expires on Monday at 9 a.m. But, triple-digit heat is expected to stick around for Pioneer Day, with high-90s to follow.
