ROY, Utah – A 5-year-old boy who was hit by a truck while riding his bike on Wednesday is making progress in his recovery at Primary Children’s Hospital.

Bentley Roberts, 5, was initially taken to McKay Dee Hospital on Wednesday evening after the collision near 4400 South 2675 West. Roberts was later flown to Primary’s in critical condition. Since then, Bentley’s mom, Jennifer Roberts, says he’s making great progress.

“He’s not going to need any surgeries…all of his vitals are good…his blood work is coming back good,” Jennifer Roberts said.

Bentley sustained a laceration to his liver and pelvic fractures after a truck hauling a trailer hit him while he was riding his bike in a Roy neighborhood. Robert’s says the driver has since reached out over the phone.

“He was crying…he explained to me that it was an accident, that he didn’t see Bentley,” Roberts said. “How upset he was… I could see it in his eyes.”

Roberts says the driver actually stopped by for a visit and came bearing gifts. The driver and his coworkers all chipped in for a brand new bike with a huge rear flag for Bentley, as well as a light-up helmet.

“He was happy,” Roberts said. “To see that the helmet lights up…he’s sold on that, he’s so excited.”

Roberts says they are keeping the driver in touch as Bentley progresses through his treatment. She says the driver hopes to see them again, and introduce Bentley to his daughter who is around the same age.

Doctors tell Roberts that the best-case-scenario would allow Bentley to go home on Sunday, he currently still has a catheter and is still in quite a bit of pain.

Jennifer is one of the organizers of a Go-Fund-Me for Bentley’s medical expenses and other lost wages.
