Utah debuts state’s first AI-assisted MRI machine

SALT LAKE UTAH — Utah has its first AI-assisted MRI machine, allowing patients with metal implants to undergo scans safely for the first time. The scanner came online for the first time this month at the Utah MRI Research Center.
With a wider design and lower magnetic field, it is a more inclusive design for many patients. Previously, it was too dangerous to scan people who had metal joints or implants, making it hard for doctors trying to make a diagnosis.
Now, the AI technology can enhance images, meaning the machine doesn’t have to use such high levels of magnetics. The wider design can be more comfortable for patients who experience claustrophobia.
The university said the new machine will give more people access to MRI imaging, improve heart healthcare and make image-guided treatments more precise.
“The installation of the Siemens Free.Max marks a major milestone for the university and the state of Utah by positioning UMRC at the forefront of low-field MRI innovation,” Satoshi Minoshima, the Radiology and Imaging Sciences department chair, wrote in a press release.
