SALT LAKE CITY — With triple-degree temperatures expected to continue in northern Utah, Salt Lake City Public Libraries have become Cool Zones.

The libraries have been added to existing Cool Zones throughout the Salt Lake Valley at county senior centers and recreational facilities.

Cool Zones are exactly how they sound — air-conditioned indoor areas that are open to the public.

“Salt Lake City is happy to add all eight of our City Library branches to the County’s list of places where the public can escape the summer heat,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall in a press release

“Our Library branches have long been welcoming, comfortable, gathering places and I’m pleased they are now listed among the many Cool Zones in Salt Lake County.”

Salt Lake County announced the availability of Cool Zones across the county at the end of May 2022. The program is a partnership between Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services, Salt Lake County Recreation Center, and Salt Lake County Library Services.

While the program is directed toward elder residents of the community, anybody that needs a break from summer temperatures can drop by a Cool Zone to stay safe from heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
