Tooele County confirms first case of measles

SALT LAKE CITY — Health officials in Tooele County confirmed the county’s first case of measles Monday night.
According to a press release from the Tooele County Health Department, a Stansbury High School student has tested positive for measles. The department stated the student was exposed after attending a “multi-district school event outside of Tooele County.”
The department also stated the student attended school while infectious, but before symptoms began. Parents of Stansbury High School students have been notified.
In the press release, Tooele County Health Officer Dr. Grant Sunada encouraged people to get vaccinated for measles or make sure they are up to date on their vaccines.
“The Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine has been shown for decades to be highly effective and safe when protecting against measles infection,” Sunada said. “Getting vaccinated helps protect those who cannot receive the vaccine and are vulnerable. Please reach out to your healthcare provider or our health department staff to see if you are up to date on your vaccines. We are available to talk through your questions about the best ways to keep you and your family healthy and safe.”
