Mild COVID-19 infection reported in person at BYU/Gonzaga b-ball game

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah County Health Department has notified Brigham Young University (BYU) that someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, or coronavirus, was at the Marriott Center on February 22, 2020, when the BYU men’s basketball team hosted Gonzaga.

In a statement, the health department said this individual had mild COVID-19 symptoms the night of the BYU game.

It is important to note that the risk of transmission to others at the game that night is low. However, as a precaution, people who were sitting within six feet of the infected individual are being contacted to inform them of their possible exposure to COVID-19.

Utah County Health Department is contacting those they believe might be at risk for the virus via phone call or letter.  If a person was at the basketball game and are not contacted, the Utah Department of Health does not consider them at risk and no further actions is needed.

According to the health department, the individual had mild symptoms on Feb. 22 and the risk of transmission to others at the game is low. As a precaution, those who were sitting within six feet of the individual are being contacted to let them know of the possible exposure. 3/7

Jenny Johnson with the Utah County Health Department said it’s been more than 14 days since the BYU game. If you haven’t had any symptoms of COVID-19 since the game, you do not need to contact a doctor to test you.

Further, state and county health officials say there is no ongoing risk within the BYU Marriott Center.

BYU officials say they will continue to assess the safety of hosting large gatherings on campus and will respond promptly to new information.
