Record number of Naloxone kits distributed in 2024

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s fight against opioid deaths has hit another landmark. Intermountain Health said it distributed a record number of Naloxone kits in 2024.
Naloxone is a medicine that reverses an opioid overdose. It’s also known by the name Narcan.
In 2024, Intermountain Health distributed over 10,000 kits, a record high.
There are different kinds of kits, including injectable doses and nasal sprays. There are versions of the nasal spray that you can get over the counter.
“Naloxone, it’s an interesting and really, I think, amazing substance,” said Jennifer Plumb, founder of Utah Naloxone.
Intermountain Health works closely with Utah Naloxone to get these kits into the community while educating people on their efforts to bring opioid deaths down.
“I would encourage people just to think, ‘Wow, maybe with a little bit of knowledge and a kit, I could be the one to save a life around me.'”
In 2014, Utah was fourth in the nation for overdose death rates. In 2021, Utah was 42nd on that list.
