SALT LAKE CITY — A free program regularly used by Utah students and parents, SafeUT, continues to receive praise for its ability to keep students safe at anytime, day or night.

Through the program’s app, students can report concerning information anonymously.

Debbie Dujanovic, co-host of Dave and Dujanovic (D2) says that she has utilized the app in the past and knows plenty of other students and parents who have as well.

Taylor Morgan joined Dujanovic on a recent episode of D2 and said that the app was instrumental in handling violent threats made against his son’s middle school in Draper.

“Threats made by a student reported via the app by other students and teachers got police involved and essentially neutralized a threat,” Morgan said.

Senator Daniel Thatcher also joined the episode to talk about the longevity of the app.

Despite some talk about the app going away, Thatcher assures that will never happen.

“It will never go away, just like 911 will never go away. There will always be a need to reach out to crisis services,” he told KSL NewsRadio.

Thacher goes on to point out that the system surrounding the app is what really makes it so reliable and useful.

“So the app is what connects you, but it’s the folks at the Huntsman Institute… they’re the ones who take the calls,” he says.

If schools pull support for the app, Thacher says there is enough need that the program will always be around.

“All we do is change how we advertise. It will still be there, the kids need it. They will never not need it.”
