Smith’s Food, Kroger to drop mask requirement if fully vaccinated

SALT LAKE CITY — Smith’s Food & Drug is joining a slew of other retailers by dropping its mask requirement for patrons and employees who are fully vaccinated. 

Starting on May 20, customers, along with most associates, who have had all their COVID-19 shots, can leave their masks in the car if they so choose, Kroger announced in a statement Wednesday.

Non-vaccinated associates will still be required to wear a face covering. Smith’s Food & Drug also asks non-vaccinated customers to continue wearing a mask inside the store. 

Additionally, masks are still required for pharmacy and clinic employees as recommended by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance for healthcare settings.

The decision is based on recommendations from the CDC and input from customers and employees. Last week, the CDC stated people who are fully vaccinated can be in public without masks. 

Kroger facilities will continue to practice enhanced cleaning measures as well as physical distancing. The company is offering associates $100 if they receive their allotted doses of the COVID-19 shot. 

Residents still in search of a COVID-19 vaccine can visit www.kroger.com/covidvaccine to make an appointment. Many pharmacies are also accepting walk-in appointments for added convenience.
