Utah teen delivers baby cousin

EDEN, Weber County — Morlie Hayes was the right person to be at home when Laura Craeger went into labor.
Craeger’s baby was coming almost three weeks early, and she stopped at her sister-in-law’s house for help. She sent her 7-year-old daughter, Adriana, to the door.
“She was like, ‘My mom’s outside! She’s going to have her baby!’ And I was like, ‘Ah!’” said Hayes, 16.

Hayes had just finished learning about labor and delivery in her child and development class in high school, she said. She stayed calm, called 911, got towels and pillows, and was there with Craeger every step of the way.
“She’s like, ‘Aunt Laura, can you lay down?” Creager continued. “I pushed, because I had another really strong contraction, and the baby came right out and started crying.”
It all happened within minutes. Hayes made sure the umbilical cord wasn’t tangled and that the child’s coloring was good. Then paramedics arrived and took over.
“It was a neat experience,” the teen said. “It was cool to be able to be there for my cousin’s birth.”
