SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a worldwide church. And as such, its leaders have been ministering to people all around the world, especially in recent weeks.

A head of the 193rd Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sarah Weaver, editor of the Church News, joined Inside Sources with Boyd Matheson. They discuss the impact the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have had around the world.

Matheson opens the conversation by mentioning some of the places church leaders have been in recent weeks. Those places include Mexico, Lithuania, England, Brazil, the Philippines, Ghana and Liberia.

“It is the charge of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to go into the world and testify of Jesus Christ,” Weaver said. “And they are doing that with a very active pace right now.”

But Weaver points out church leaders aren’t going out to visit their own members. They are reaching out to leaders of other faiths and to government leaders.

Ministering to all people

She says President M. Russell Ballard and Elder Quentin L. Cook, both of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, recently visited New York City and Washington, D.C. Their trip included a visit with Cardinal Timothy Dolan, of the Catholic Church.

“It happens all the time on these visits,” Weaver said. “You see our leaders involved in humanitarian aid, in government visits and they do interfaith visits. And so, it’s not just a trip to their own members, but an outreach that reaches further than that.”

Additionally, Weaver also talked about a trip Elder D. Todd Christofferson made to Puerto Rico to dedicate the temple there.

Elder Christofferson speaks fluent Spanish and dedicated the temple in Spanish. According to Weaver, the Church News interviewed him the previous day and he answered every question in English.

When Elder Christofferson was asked why he was going to dedicate the temple in Spanish, he said “Because I can.”

“That just shows the breadth of and the experience of the leaders of the church,” Weaver said.
