SALT LAKE CITY — As Utah continues in a state of emergency for flood risk, Utah businesses are facing an unexpected threat.

According to Be Ready Utah, 40% to 60% of businesses without a continuity plan never reopen after a disaster.

Be Ready Utah Outreach Specialist James Ray spoke to Dave and Dujanovic about continuity plans and how they help businesses.

Ray said a continuity plan looks at what things are essential to a business and asks, “What are we gonna do if that essential function stops working or fails or is no longer available in some form?”

If a business doesn’t have its essential functions, they stop making the money they need to stay open.

To avoid that, Ray said, business owners should ask, “What do I need to do to stay afloat and to keep my finances intact?”

Businesses should consider things like infrastructure, protecting important documents, insurance, and cybersecurity when making a continuity plan, Ray said.

Be Ready Utah has resources for businesses to help them prepare for the unknown.
