SALT LAKE CITY — Over 1,500 shoppers were surveyed by Swiftly and over 80% said they’ve had to change their grocery shopping habits as inflation hits their wallets. More than half are trying to budget for holiday meals and a third say they’re planning on slimming down festivities this year.

One shopper Caroline Lowe said the prices just keep going up.

“It’ll make it more expensive,” she said. “Everything at Christmas is gonna be more expensive now. So, it’ll definitely have an impact.”

Almost 70% of shoppers report that they’re struggling to pay for groceries at all.

One shopper, Danny, said he has had to the foodbank rather than the grocery store.

“It gives you less income to spend on gifts and different items like that and food,” he said. “I actually had to go to the food bank the other day because prices are so high right now. So, yeah inflation sucks.”

More and more people are waiting for coupons and sales in order to save money for their holiday meals.

And others try to keep things simple like, Janine Creager.

“I don’t do a lot of shopping. I tend to try to give gifts that are more time and gifts of myself,” Creager said. “Groceries, yes, groceries have gone up more but I look for coupons…so I’m always looking for those deals.”

While normally snacks and treats are common this time of year they’re one of the first to get axed, and over 30%of shoppers have already taken them off their list. Impulse purchases are also lower as people hold to their grocery lists.

The prices are hitting everyone this holiday season.
