Closely watched eaglet, Sunny, takes first flight, leaves nest

SALT LAKE CITY — One of the eaglets that has been the subject of intense online interest ever since they first appeared in their nest in the forest of California’s Big Bear Valley has taken the next step.
On Monday, as seen on the popular 24-hour webcam, the female eaglet named Sunny was seen spreading her wings and flying away for the first time.
Friends of Big Bear Valley made the announcement on their Instagram page.

At the time this story was published, it was unknown whether Sunny had returned to her sibling, Gizmo, and her parents, Jackie and Shadow, in the nest.
The Big Bear Valley is found within the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California. The non-profit Friends of Big Bear Valley said its goal is to protect the area through environmental education and advocacy.
