SALT LAKE CITY — According to Dr. Liz Hale, a marriage and family therapist, men’s behavior is often the deciding factor in whether or not a relationship will succeed.

“What men do, by a wide margin, is the crucial factor that separates a successful marriage from a failed one,” Hale told Maria Shilaos on  Let’s Get Moving with Maria. “It doesn’t mean that women don’t have our part, but a man’s actions — that seems to be the key variable that determines whether a relationship succeeds or fails.”

While some men may find that knowledge intimidating, Hale views it as “great news for men,” as it reminds them of the power they hold to improve and maintain their relationships. She advised men to re-frame their partners’ bad days as opportunities to offer support and demonstrate emotional intelligence.

“If men can learn to stand firm and tall in the midst of that emotional tropical storm, they are the heroes,” Hale said.

Hale also offered questions men can ask themselves to assess the state of their relationships, along with tips for becoming a more emotionally available partner. You can listen to the full interview here.
