Halloween (R)

for horror violence and bloody images, language, brief drug use and nudity
Steve’s Rating: B

There’s a chill in the air and the leaves are all changing, pumpkins are being carved and people are getting lost in corn fields so we think it’s safe to say that we’re now smack dab in the middle of spooky season, and this weekend sees the sequel to a cult classic that changed the way we all look at Halloween.

Forty years after Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) narrowly escaped the masked murderer Michael, they find their paths intersecting for one final time. This new sequel to the original 1978 horror hit has continued the story of the first film while carrying on the continuity of the other films. For example, there’s no brother-sister connection between Michael and Laurie, which Steve Salles says is probably a good thing.

“That kind of puts a different weight on the film. We want him [Michael] to be more spontaneous. Like, yeah, she just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that’s why she was chosen then and now it’s 40 years later.”

But just because they don’t follow with the continuity doesn’t mean that the new film shy’s away from the things that had moviegoers on the edge of their seats holding their breath from the other films

“There are all these little references that you’ll see throughout the movie where they showed respect for the sequels without actually, you know, saying anything about them if that makes any sense,” Steve said. Mentioning most notably a scene that takes place in a bathroom stall or through one of those louvered doors.

This actually turned out to be a lot better than I thought it was going to be,” Steve said, “it’s not as good as the original. But in some ways, it’s better. I’m giving it a solid B”
