“I would like to recognize Angela Berry and the dedication she has to her students. In the last 5 years Mrs. Berry has been the 5th grade teacher for all 3 of my kids. All 3 of my children have had very different academic journeys. School has always come easy to my oldest daughter. Mrs. Berry found ways to challenge her and help her grow.
We were fortunate enough to have my son get her for 5th grade as his general education classroom. My son is a life skills student and was struggling this year. The life skills program was moved to a newly built school and the life skills teacher he had been with had left. He was struggling with these changes and in a lot of ways sinking. He is also acutely aware that he is different and has a strong desire to be with his peers in the general education classes.
Mrs. Berry embraced him and made adaptations to her lesson plans so that he could be included in the general education class as much as possible. I watched my son flourish that year. He was elected by this class as the President of her class, and he went on to be on the student council for the elementary school. Mrs. Berry supported him and encouraged him, and he was able to push the boundaries for a life-skills student which he is continuing to do to this day.
This brings me to this year and my youngest daughter. Her academic journey has been bumpy and not easy for her. When our concerns were shared with Mrs. Berry at the beginning of the school year. She and my daughter came up with a strategy to ensure she was successful. As I look at my daughter’s grades and growth this year again it is easy to see the positive impact that Mrs. Berry is having. My daughter has been struggling with a personal issue. The empathy Mrs. Berry has shown and support she has given to he has been invaluable.
In my opinion Mrs. Berry sets the bar for teachers and I hope every child gets to experience a teacher like her in their academic journey.”
