Clete Johansson, Granger High School

“Clete Johansson is the Library Media Specialist at Granger High School, and is an indispensable member of the teaching team. Mr. Johansson’s responsibilities are boundless and never ending, yet he always welcomes students and faculty into the library and makes time to help them. I don’t know if he sleeps or eats, since he is in the library before 7:00 am, ready to provide a place where students can get help on homework or get a Chromebook issue resolved, check out a book, or play games at the numerous stations he’s set up. Mr. Johansson is also in the library during lunch, and he creates challenges and puzzles that students can participate in to win treats and snacks. Many students choose to participate in these challenges at lunchtime on a daily basis. Mr. Johansson also keeps the library open after school to give the students a place to study, get computer help, or socialize quietly with friends.
Mr. Johansson not only devotes countless hours to serving students, he is also an amazing mentor and resource for teachers. He is never too busy (even if he really is) to suggest new computer programs and technology to help teachers reach all student learners. He even meets with teachers before and after school or during lunch to help them learn how to use the technology and create lessons incorporating the new technology. Mr. Johansson is not only the Library Specialist, but he is also one of the Technology Specialists in the school, so if teachers ask, he will even come into a teachers’ class to help them integrate technology into their lessons.
Despite all of his responsibilities and the immense amount of time running the library and assisting students and teachers takes (and it’s a lot with 3000 students and 300 faculty members), Mr. Johansson always has a welcoming smile on his face and something positive and encouraging to say. He always helps with kindness and points out what people are doing well, rather than focusing on what they don’t know. I can’t think of a better example of a kind, selfless teacher and mentor than Mr. Johansson.”
