“Kent Burton teaches US History at Granger High School, and if you were to walk the halls, you’d be able to identify him immediately. He would be the one dressed in a costume or period clothing of whatever time in history he was teaching during a particular week. Mr. Burton is committed to his role in history – he doesn’t change into a person of a time period when he arrives at school. He actually walks into school in full costume. It’s always so fun to see what he’s wearing and to ask him about his class, which I imagine is why he does it. What better way to get students to learn than to spark their curiosity?
Mr. Burton’s dedication to teaching history doesn’t stop at his attire. He actually changes the display on the large windows at the entrance of his classroom so that it also reflects the time period he is covering. For those who lived through a certain time period, it’s a fun “blast from the past” to see Mr. Burton’s classroom displays and outfits. For the students, it definitely gives them a preview of what to expect when they attend class.
I think that it’s so great that Mr. Burton goes to such great lengths to pull his students into his lessons and really pique their interest and curiosity. Mr. Burton makes history accessible, relevant, and exciting to students who might not otherwise find a connection with the past.”
