Driver dies in collision with train in SLC overnight

SALT LAKE CITY — One person was killed early Thursday morning after a crash involving a car and a train in Salt Lake City, police said.

Just before 2 a.m., the Salt Lake City Police Department said it was responding to the crash scene near 1887 S. 700 West.

SLCPD said after the two collided, the car caught fire on impact. The driver and only occupant in the car died at the scene.

The “major crash team” with SLCPD was investigating the cause of the crash and other factors that may have contributed to the collision.

Traffic was closed on 700 West from 1700 South to 1900 South. Police said the roads were reopened in the area sometime before 6 a.m.
