SALT LAKE CITY — A fatal crash on Interstate 15 forced all lanes of traffic to exit through downtown Salt Lake City on Wednesday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Lt. Cameron Roden with UHP said a red jeep and a black pickup truck collided, and the driver of the jeep was killed in the impact.
There were no immediate details on the condition of the person or people in the pickup truck.
All drivers traveling on northbound I-15 were forced to exit at 600 South in downtown Salt Lake City, or onto westbound I-80 while crews responded to the crash scene.
Just before 9 a.m., Roden said three left lanes were reopened past 600 South, including the HOV lane. Roden said it would take time for the delays to filter out of the Salt Lake Valley, and the Utah Department of Transportation additionally added that delays along northbound I-15 would be backed up as far south as Sandy.
For all those who exited at 600 South, UHP said drivers could regain access to northbound I-15 at 500 South.
Lanes on eastbound Interstate 80 were also affected after traffic crews closed the transition ramp, preventing cars from exiting onto northbound I-15.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the crash was located on I-15 at North Temple in Salt Lake County.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated as KSL gathers more information.
