I-80 closures planned for Summit, Tooele counties

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation is warning drivers in two different counties to plan for delays as they start construction on Interstate 80 this summer.

I-80 construction in Summit County 

Crews will be repaving I-80 in Summit County just west of Kimball Junction and continuing east of U.S. Route 40.

UDOT spokesperson John Gleason said closures started on Monday. 

The construction is happening at night, but officials said there will also be lane closures during the day, causing some delays.

Closures are scheduled Monday through Saturday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m.

The project will finish up in the fall.

I-80 construction in Tooele County

UDOT spokesperson Kyler Sharp said more construction is happening in Tooele. Crews will add a merging lane onto eastbound I-80 in Tooele County, connecting state Route 36 with S.R. 201.

This will take much longer to wrap up, with construction happening for the next year.

Closures for S.R. 36 and I-80 started on Monday.

‘Use caution’

Sharp said UDOT does most of its work during the summer and asked for drivers to be patient as they travel.

“It’s summer, so anytime you see roadwork happening on state roadways, just make sure you reduce your speed, use caution … Ultimately, we just want to get you going to where you want to get to safely.”
