SALT LAKE CITY — An overturned semi and a hazmat spill on westbound Interstate 84 prior to U.S. Highway 89 led officials to close a portion of I-84 on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Mountain Green Fire Protection District, the semitruck was carrying multiple totes of liquid fertilizer potassium hydroxide, each tote holding around 250 gallons of the fertilizer.

For several hours, traffic was backed up between the power plant and the city of Mountain Green along I-84. By 4:30 p.m., the Utah Department of Transportation said all lanes were open with heavy delays that remained throughout Mountain Green.

“This is the 23rd semi since 2020 to crash in this exact spot,” the fire protection district said. “We remain concerned that a more serious Haz Mat spill from other semis plying the canyon with truly hazardous substances may close the canyon for a long period and affect lives and the Morgan County economy.”

The fire protection district went on to request a lower speed limit for Weber Canyon.

“We encourage UDOT and (the Utah Highway Patrol) to lower all limits in Weber Canyon to 55 mph and add more flashing signage very close to this curve westbound to slow all traffic there,” the fire protection district said.

“Mountain Green Firefighters on Engine 131 responded to assist Weber Fire District units and South Weber Fire Ambulance 1 and other units,” the fire protection district said.

The driver of the semitruck was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries, while the hazmat spill was cleaned up by Weber-Morgan Health Department with the help of firefighters keeping it contained.
