SALT LAKE CITY — Two back-to-back crashes on Interstate 15 led to several injuries Wednesday morning.
Lt. Cameron Roden with Utah Highway Patrol said both crashes happened in Leeds on northbound I-15.
The first crash involved a stolen pickup truck, according to Roden.
“A stolen Chevy Silverado pickup truck was southbound on I-15 mile marker 22. The vehicle went off the road to the left and rolled over the concrete barrier, coming to rest on its wheels in the northbound left shoulder,” Roden explained.
According to Roden, three people were in the truck when the crash occurred. One woman was ejected from the truck, leading to injuries that Roden said were “critical to serious.” Despite her injuries, he said the woman was in stable condition.
“The other two occupants had moderate injuries,” Roden said. “All three were transported to an area hospital.”
Bad crash on I-15 NB in Leeds. Currently only 1-right lane is open, but don’t be surprised if @UTHighwayPatrol closes the roadway. Drivers out of St. George can exit at MP 22 and get right back on NB 15 to get around the accident. pic.twitter.com/WyN5OWpMPo

I-15 cleanup turns into second crash
As a Utah Department of Transportation sweeper truck was cleaning up the wreckage, it was struck by a Nissan car.
“The Nissan then spun to the right sideways and got hit in the passenger side by another vehicle,” Roden said. “The driver of the Nissan was transported in critical condition.”
Roden added that the sweeper did have its emergency lights on while cleaning the roadway, the truck driver was not injured, and the driver of the vehicle that hit the Nissan received minor injuries.
The driver of the Nissan was a man in his mid 20’s, according to Roden.

At one point, two right lanes were open in the northbound lanes, with the left shoulder and one left lane blocked off after the second crash.
“It’s always a good reminder for us to make sure that we’re paying attention to what’s going on in the roadway,” Roden said. “We are going into the 100 deadliest days of summer, where we see severity of crashes really tend to increase, and a lot of that has to do with people traveling long distances, traveling faster speeds, and things like that.”
