4.0 magnitude earthquake hits Wayne County

SALT LAKE CITY — Residents near Hanksville may have felt the earth shake Monday night after a 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit Wayne County.
The University of Utah Seismograph Stations said the quake could be felt at 10:32 p.m. with the epicenter located about 20 miles west of Hanksville.
The United States Geological Survey said reports came in from people being able to feel the earthquake as far north as Grantsville. Other reports included South Jordan, Herriman and Eagle Mountain, with nearby reports in Boulder, Monroe, Ferron and Hanksville.
According to the U of U, the quake was the biggest earthquake to hit within 15 miles of the epicenter since March 29, 1998, when a 3.2 magnitude quake hit the area. The U of U was able to record 13 earthquakes since 1981 that were at least 2.0 magnitude or greater within 15 miles of Monday’s epicenter.
