Officials identify man found dead near Mount Olympus trailhead

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah — A man found dead near the Mount Olympus Trailhead by search and rescue crews on Christmas has been identified.

Det. Arlan Bennett with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, William Thomas, was 80 years old.

Bennett said the sheriff’s office received a call from hikers reporting a body found approximately a mile up the Mount Olympus Trailhead. When first responders arrived, they located Thomas and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Bennett said it appeared Thomas died as a result of a fall he sustained while hiking.
