SALT LAKE CITY — A man is dead after being shot by police when officers said he stabbed a police officer, prompting police to shoot the man on Saturday night.
According to a Springville City Police Department news release, neighbors reported hearing a woman screaming and crying at 10:25 p.m. in the area of 180 S 300 W.
“The officers made contact with the woman and were investigating when a man abruptly exited the residence and attacked one of the officers with a large knife,” police said. “The officers drew their weapons and fired to defend themselves.”
Officers said the man was shot when they drew their weapons on him. According to the news release, medical aid was given to the man until he was taken to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.
“The officer who was attacked was also taken to the hospital where he was treated for a stab wound,” SCPD said. “The injuries to the officer were not life threatening and will recover from the injury.”
According to police, the police officer who was stabbed was released from the hospital after receiving treatment and the incident is being investigated.
