At approximately 5 a.m. Sunday, deputies arrived at a residence in Hyrum after a person called dispatch and said he had killed his wife, according to Chad Jensen with the Cache County Sheriff’s Office.
A statement from the Cache County Attorney said that the 45-year-old suspect, Jorge Andrade, had disclosed that he had just murdered his wife, Holly Andrade.
According to a release, when deputies arrived, Andrade “opened fire on responding deputies.” Deputies reportedly took cover and called the sheriff’s SWAT team.
The suspect reportedly “opened fire on the SWAT team and they returned fire.”
According to a Facebook post from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, police evacuated the neighborhood, saying people needed to “STAY COMPLETELY AWAY” from 100 South 400 West and Main Street in Hyrum.
David Mares said a relative even experienced a close call.
“My uncle hears, sees a bullet pass through the wall,” Mares said. “He said it went through 2 walls and hit a window.”
Following that incident, armored vehicles from Logan, Brigham City and Ogden Police Departments arrived and “containment was set up around the house,” according to a release.
Deputies reported negotiation teams contacted the suspect, and said he responded with pictures of a bomb vest and “what appeared to be explosives inside the house.”
When evacuation orders were lifted, Christian Garcia said the house looked much different.
“There wasn’t that much debris,” Garcia said as he compared the before and after appearance of the house. “When we came back just a few minutes ago, obviously because of the shootout, there’s debris, windows are shattered—just a mess.”
Deputies said they eventually began clearing windows to see into the home after no contact with the suspect for a few hours.
The Cache County Attorney stated that Andrade was located inside the trailer, deceased. Deputies later found Holly’s body with multiple knife wounds.
Neighbors said they were unsettled by what took place.
“I feel like God really protected me on this one—especially when I prayed for him to protect me,” Mares said. “I’m really happy that I made it and my whole family made it safe.”
On Monday, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office told KSL it is not conducting the investigation and referred the case to the Cache County Attorney’s Office.
