SALT LAKE CITY — Charges of aggravated child abuse, a first degree felony, were filed Tuesday against a Cache County corrections deputy.

According to Logan District Court documents, Hyrum resident Drake A. Balls, age 29, was arrested on Nov. 4. for an incident involving his child on Oct. 5, 2025.

On the same day, Logan police were called to Logan Regional Hospital where a mother had taken her child who reportedly had several bite marks on his body.

The mother told police and the hospital that her ex-husband had caused the injuries to the child. Police reported seeing photos that the mother had taken, and agreed that the injuries “were very red and swollen and were clearly identifiable as teeth impressions” on the child’s back and bicep.

The next day, the child spoke with officials at the Cache County Children’s Justice Center. According to police, the child said that his father “bent him in half while on the couch and sat on top of him,” during playtime.

The child said Balls kept biting him, even though he’d asked his father to stop, according to police. It was not detailed in court documents why the arrest occurred just over a month later.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said Balls is employed by Cache County, and that he had been placed on unpaid leave pending an internal investigation.
