SALT LAKE CITY — The snowy weather on Presidents’ Day Weekend has led to numerous accidents across Utah.

Layton car crash

In Layton, the Layton City Fire Department reported a car catching fire after the vehicle crashed. Although the LFD did not specify that the crash was caused by slippery road conditions, the fire department did talk about taking caution while driving on Saturday in a Facebook post.

“Roads are extremely slippery, so please slow down, drive carefully, and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going,” the LFD said in a Facebook post. “Stay safe out there!”

LFD advised the public on Tuesday of rain and snow conditions, along with how to drive safely in this type of weather.

“Winter weather is rolling in, and with snow and rain in the forecast, it’s time to drive with extra caution,” the LFD said in a Facebook post. “Slippery roads and reduced visibility can turn a routine drive into a dangerous one.”

The LFD advised the public to slow down to increase stopping distance, as well as increasing following distance.

“Keep at least 5-7 seconds of space between you and the car ahead,” the Facebook post said.

Another tip the LFD gave is to avoid sudden movements, turn a vehicle’s headlights on and to keep an eye out for black ice.

Bangerter Highway crash

One weather-related crash on Bangerter Highway caused the road to close from 4700 S. to 6200 S. at Mile Marker 16.

The Taylorsville Police Department said in an Instagram post that the highway was closed on Saturday morning due to icy conditions. That closure was re-opened at about 10:30 a.m.

“Thank you for your patience and please keep using safe-driving practices, especially now that winter is here,” the TVPD post said.

Brookside car crash

The Dammeron Valley Fire and Rescue reported in a Facebook post that a car accident happened on Friday night in Brookside.

When responders arrived, fire and rescue said a mid-sized SUV had rolled over with one person inside of the vehicle.

“Crews stabilized the vehicle to prevent additional movement and extricated the occupant,” the Facebook post said. “There were no injuries to the occupant and the cause is under investigation.”
