Car crash in Kearns leaves infant dead, driver in stable but critical condition

SALT LAKE CITY — A fatal crash in Kearns early Monday morning left an infant dead and a driver in stable but critical condition.
According to Sgt Amyee Race with the Unified Police Department, a family car driven by a 23-year-old man rear-ended another vehicle traveling westbound near 4100 West and 5415 South. A 17 year-old girl and her infant were also present in the car.
The crash was initially labeled as a hit and run after the vehicle allegedly drove off, leaving the person hit in critical condition. Police said the car shortly returned to the scene. No other people were in the hit car.
The 23-year-old man sustained injuries on his lower body and was transported to the hospital in fair condition. The infant was transported along with her mother, with the infant in critical condition. The infant later died in the hospital.
The person the 23-year-old driver allegedly struck was also transported to the hospital in critical condition. As of Tuesday, Race said the person was now stable but remained in critical condition.
“I think it’s just a good reminder of everyone, just to be cautious when they’re driving,” Race said. “Be aware of their surroundings and slow down. Our hearts go out to the families of everyone injured in the case.”
