Ron McBride's foundation chipped in $15K...

Northwest Middle School students thank former U. coach Ron McBride for investing in their "Healthy Learners" program.

SALT LAKE CITY — Former University of Utah head football coach Ron McBride is giving $15,000 to Northwest Middle School aimed at promoting healthy choices and “healthy learners.”

Principal Marissa Zuchetto-Hautau says it’s an important school goal.

“We know that if kids are in tune and kids are involved, they are less likely to turn to unhealthy choices like drugs or alcohol or gangs or violent activities,” she says.

Northwest Middle School has been adding more clubs, teams, dance, debate and after-school activities for the students.

McBride’s foundation is supporting the school’s Healthy Learners Initiative with the grant.

“I just like everything they are doing out here,” he says. “As we were looking for where to invest our money, we were looking for people who are progressive education-wise and have the same vision we have for their students. And we said, ‘what can we do to help?’”

McBride says the partnership is an attempt to close the achievement gap.

“When everybody is on the same mindset, then it carries over to the students and then they benefit from it,” he says.

McBride has also given checks to schools in Ogden and West Jordan.
