Construction sign altered to display racial slur; police offer reward for information

ALPINE — Police are asking the public for help with an investigation after a construction sign was altered in Alpine.
A video circulating on social media showed an electric sign that contained a racial slur, reportedly near a church on Canyon Crest Road.
The city of Alpine said the sign was reported on Friday night by people who saw it while passing by.
“We received a call last night regarding an incident with a construction message board in Alpine,” Alpine said. “Lone Peak Police were notified, and the message was immediately disabled.”
The Lone Peak Police Department announced Monday that it was handling the investigation, and was offering a $1,000 reward to anybody with information that leads to the arrest of whoever altered the sign.
The sign also contained someone’s name. Lone Peak police determined that person “was not involved in or responsible for the actions related to this event,” the department said.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the language on the sign to call the Lone Peak Police Department at 801-756-9800.
“Neither the city nor our contractor condone this type of messaging,” Alpine said.
